Selecting pet-friendly candles when you have indoor pets

It is a scenario all pet owners can relate to: your beloved pet lives indoors, but animals are as animals do and sometimes they bring the stink from outside...inside.

It is especially worse during rainy seasons. Puddles are fun...but only for kids and dogs! It is hardly fun for the rest of us adults who have to clean both house and mischievous babies (human or otherwise).

A popular way of deodorizing the house is by burning scented candles. The house smells great, you give visitors the illusion that you clean your house 10 times a day and ooooh the ambiance!

But wait, why is Lassie drooling and wheezing?

Turn off those (candle)lights because some scented candles and diffusers can be harmful to your pets!

Are scented candles safe for dogs, or pets in general?

Did you know that certain essential oils we human derives health benefits from can be extremely harmful to your pets? Essential oils such as lavender (calming), tea tree (antimicrobial), and Ylang Ylang (fights fatigue) are toxic essential oils to cats and dogs.

Remember, pets such as dogs have olfactory senses 10,000 times stronger than we humans do. Certain scents can be irritating to their keen sense of smells, while some others can be downright toxic.

How to select pet-friendly scented candles to deodorize your house

The first thing to look out for when selecting pet-safe candles is to avoid paraffin candles. While cheaper, paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum or oil shale therefore not as pet friendly or even environmentally friendly.

Secondly, go for candles made out of soy or beeswax instead, which are natural. Beeswax is the most natural and safest option. However, beeswax is expensive due to the extensive process just to get a small amount of beeswax. Soy candles are the best alternative when it comes to cost-effective natural ingredients.

Lastly, make sure the essential oils used to scent the candles or the diffuser aren't toxic to your dogs or cats. Below is a list of essential oils that you should not use around your dogs or cats.
